  • a pot
  • a stove
  • some oil
  • some popcorn

The Right Pot

  • Heavy-bottom
  • Lid with a top handle
  • Clear lid for extra fun
  • A wok can also work, if it has a lid

The Right Stove

  • The one you have
  • Gas works great
  • Electric works great
  • Don’t buy a new stove

The Right Oil

  • High smoke point
  • High smoke point
  • Most oils are fine

Popcorn

  • Lots of varieties
  • Standard yellow seems to be the fluffiest

Step One

  • Place pot on large burner, on high.
  • Cover bottom of pot with oil.
  • Drop 5 kernels in, cover, and shake.
  • Wait for five pops.

  • Turn the burner off.
  • Cover bottom of pot with popcorn.
  • For kettle corn, cover popcorn with 1/4 cup of sugar.
  • Replace lid and give it a shake.
  • Count to 30. Really. Slowly.
  • Ready a large bowl next to the stove.

Step Three

The Big Bang Theory

  • Turn the burner on high.
  • Shake vigorously until popping starts.
  • Keep shaking until popping slows.
  • Remove from heat and pour into bowl.
  • Season to taste, toss with hands.
